In 2014, Charlie Brain and Walker Brown, exchange students in South Africa took off on a 20 hour bus ride along South Africa's Southern Coast en route to the wild coast. The wild coast is a remote part of the country famous for being the birthplace of Nelson Mandela. On their second day of their week long journey, a wandering dog Lubanzi began to follow the pair. He walked along the pair for six days and 100 miles until he disapeared in the middle of the night.

They returned to South Africa in search of land, producers, and wine makers in hopes of creating a collaborative wine brand that emphasized their ideals of being an innovative and socially responsible wine brand. And thus, after meeting with like-minded winemakers, producers, and independent growers Luabanzi was created.
